April 2010 JHTS’s R&D program to bring enhancements to our range of technologically advanced marking systems – that is systems which do not use wet chemical analysis - was broadened in January 2010, with the start of a 3 year project with Manchester Metropolitan University under the aegis of a Technology Strategy Board sponsored “Knowledge Transfer Partnership”. Pictured opposite are our associate researcher (soon to be Dr) Meththa Samaranayake, with Professor Nick Bowring and our Research Chemist Dr. Guy Powell in the centre, who are working on designs for improved optics in the detection devices used in quantitative marker field tests. |

September 2009 Following the recent Swine Flu pandemic, John Hogg Technical Solutions has updated its strategic approach to dealing with pandemic flu. An in-house document has been produced and issued to all staff, detailing the company’s contingency plan to ensure the business can continue to function properly in the event of pandemic flu affecting our staff, our suppliers and our customers. Key points from the plan are available upon request, along with recommendations which we strongly advise are followed in order to maintain the continuing success of our businesses. Generally, we recommend that customers maintain maximum stock levels at all times, as this will act as a buffer to minimise the impact of any disruptions or delays due to pandemic flu. |

July 2009 Ben Nevis Challenge A small group of the fitter JHTS staff and friends went quite a long way to raise money for Christie’s Hospital, Manchester this month. A walking and climbing expedition to conquer Ben Nevis (1344 Metres high), near Fort William, Scotland was organised by Andy Maconachie, and 12 of our team succeeded in reaching the summit, despite the very un-July like weather! Five of the team opted for the tough climb along the Carn Mor Dearg Arête. £2500 was raised by sponsorship and donations for the world-renowned Cancer Treatment Hospital. As part of the recovery process from their exertions, the team also took part in a very strenuous tour of the Ben Nevis Scotch Whisky Distillery the following day, where quite a few drams were supped in celebration!! A Very Big “WELL DONE” to all the Team! Jonathan Collins, Andrew Flemming, Mick Goodwin, Andrew Maconachie, Andy Holmes, Margaret Leyden, Mark Meadows, Mala Patel, Mike Phillips Matt Pierce, Guy Powell, Michelle Pryke, Shaun Robinson and Parag Zaveri |

March 2009 Comic Relief comes around every couple of years raising funds for projects helping underprivileged children world wide. This year the whole of Britain was encouraged, despite the recession, to " Do something funkny for money ", so at JHTS we held a Fancy Dress Darts competition, organised by Barbara (RHS top phot), and raised over £300 . So much fun was had on the day that we can't remember who actually won the darts match!! However, the prize for the best (and most daring costume) went to Kathy (in the grass skirt), who is shown with her colleagues from our sales teams. (bottom photo) Donations to Comic Relief are accepted at:-

August 2008 Traditionally this is one of the quieter months at JHTS , with most of Europe on holidays , but this year unusually for us , we have seen quite a few changes in personnel .
Christine Bowling , Purchasing Manager, ( far right) has left us after 12 years to emigrate to Eire, while Margaret Leyden ( 2nd from right) has joined us , strengthening our purchasing team with her extensive experience . Also shown is Ayo Olawale ( 2nd from left) , who is leaving our QC team to study at Manchester University this autumn. At the back , although he is not usually so shy , is Bob Martin ( rear left) who recently passed a big birthday milestone, (can’t say how many years but it does end in a “0”!!!), with Rita Phillips ( centre), and Ian Herod ( rear right) , a recent retiree.

July 2008 Nowadays we find ourselves in the midst of another oil crisis, with fuel costs so high that thefts of red and road diesel have multiplied over recent months. John Hogg is currently working with major UK coach, bus and transport companies to provide protection from theft and pilfering , for their valuable diesel stocks, by use of both covert and visible marking systems , which provide both deterrence and detection. |

July 2008 The end of June marked the end of an era for John Hogg when one of our longest serving members of staff retired after 32 years . Ian Herod , pictured right telling a complicated joke to Robert Webb (MD), joined John Hogg Group in 1976 in the midst of the 70’s energy crisis, when the group was involved in supplying insulation for houses. In subsequent years , Ian transferred to various Group oil storage and distribution businesses , and joined Technical Solutions in Manchester in a senior production role in the 90’s. All the staff wish him and his family a long , happy and healthy retirement. |

May 2008
This scheme finds fully-funded work experience places for recent European graduates from areas of exceptionally low graduate employment within the EU, such as the Andalucia region of Spain.
In conjunction with our technical and production teams, he is working on several engineering projects, with the intention of custom designing handling equipment to further reduce the exposure from low flash solvents and powder raw materials, to both our staff working with the chemicals, and the atmosphere and environment .

April 2008 Pictured to the right are Andrew Waller (on the left) being thanked for his many years service and contribution, by Chairman Robert Webb, on the occasion of Andrew’s last board meeting at JHTS in April 2008. Andrew intends to retire at the end of April, after being with our company for more than 20 years, the last 13 or so as Managing Director, and he certainly now deserves a bit of a rest!!. Later this year, we hope he will mastermind our pre-registrations under REACH regulations, and in the future he will act in a consultative role, bring his extensive experience of the fuel marking business to our R and D effort. All the staff at JHTS wish Andrew a long and happy retirement. |

March 2008
Pictured (top photo) are Yun You (Sales Manager) and Mick Goodwin (Compliance Manager) with Mick’s daughter and (lower photo) Barbara Massey (Administrator) and Rita Phillips (Export Coordinator) with Grandchildren, during the Mile run around Manchester City Centre. Other events during the fund raising week were a Sports and Entertainment Quiz, won by a team lead by Rob Martin (who perhaps had an unfair advantage due to his long association with Soccer both as player and referee !!), a darts challenge, a 5-a-side football match and a Nintendo Wii tennis tournament. Sponsorship and donations from family, friends and visitors raised around £1000 for the charity. We can’t wait for Comic Relief events later in the year so we can do it all again!!.
