August 2010

John Hogg Technical Solutions welcomes some new faces to our organisation this summer. Pictured in the upper photograph is Suzanne Alecrim, our Customer Services Supervisor. She has years of experience in exporting and sales support, and also speaks several European languages.

We have also been able to fund work experience opportunities for 2 UK students this year. Shown below are Jane Power, a first class chemistry graduate from Manchester University, who will spend 2 months in our laboratories working on novel dye syntheses with our R&D team, while Emma Massey, currently studying for a degree in mathematics at York University, is developing our systems for tracking material costs in our procurement department.
Welcome and Good Luck to all three!

June 2010.

John Hogg Technical Solutions has responded to a recent Department for Transport (DfT) consultation regarding the effect of the compulsory introduction of low sulphur diesel and gas oil in the UK.
This necessary change to the UK fuels market is brought about by compliance to the environmentally driven fuel quality Directives (2009/30/EC), and may have some unintended consequences for the supply of GOMC.
DfT advises that from 1st January 2011 all gas oil (a.k.a. “red diesel”) in the UK will contain no more than 10 milligrams of sulphur per kilogram of fuel.

Full details of the company’s response document and supply capabilities can be obtained from William Webb, UK Sales Manager :  william.webb@johnhogg.co.uk.

April 2010

JHTS’s R&D program to bring enhancements to our range of technologically advanced marking systems – that is systems which do not use wet chemical analysis -  was broadened in January 2010, with the start of a 3 year project with Manchester Metropolitan University under the aegis of a Technology Strategy Board sponsored “Knowledge Transfer Partnership”. Pictured opposite are our associate researcher (soon to be Dr) Meththa Samaranayake, with Professor Nick Bowring and our Research Chemist Dr. Guy Powell in the centre, who are working on designs for improved optics in the detection devices used in quantitative marker field tests.
In addition, we are very pleased to announce that we have succeeded in our bid for a EPRSC Industrial CASE award, “Chemistry Innovation”, which will enable us to continue our collaborative research projects with Loughborough University’s Department of Chemical Analysis.

March 2010

In the UK the national “Sport Relief” charity campaign has come round  once more, and John Hogg staff have thrown themselves energetically into some fun fund raising with a “Screen Test” Quiz all about  films.
Pictured left, with their Colourful Cake Prize,  are the winning “Dye Another Day” (Geddit??) team of  (L to R) Jonathon Collins, Will Webb, Bob Martin,  and Andy Flemming, who won the quiz by a close margin from the “Dye Hard” team .
Obviously they have all spent far too much time in the back row at the movies!!!

September 2009

Following the recent Swine Flu pandemic, John Hogg Technical Solutions has updated its strategic approach to dealing with pandemic flu.

An in-house document has been produced and issued to all staff, detailing the company’s contingency plan to ensure the business can continue to function properly in the event of pandemic flu affecting our staff, our suppliers and our customers.

Key points from the plan are available upon request, along with recommendations which we strongly advise are followed in order to maintain the continuing success of our businesses.

Generally, we recommend that customers maintain maximum stock levels at all times, as this will act as a buffer to minimise the impact of any disruptions or delays due to pandemic flu.

Ben Nevis Challenge

A small group of the fitter JHTS staff and friends went quite a long way to raise money for Christie’s Hospital, Manchester this month.

A walking and climbing expedition to conquer Ben Nevis (1344 Metres high), near Fort William, Scotland was organised by Andy Maconachie, and 12 of our team succeeded in reaching the summit, despite the very un-July like weather!  Five of the team opted for the tough climb along the Carn Mor Dearg Arête.

£2500 was raised by sponsorship and donations for the world-renowned Cancer Treatment Hospital.

As part of the recovery process from their exertions, the team also took part in a very strenuous tour of the Ben Nevis Scotch Whisky Distillery the following day, where quite a few drams were supped in celebration!!

A Very Big “WELL DONE” to all the Team!

Jonathan Collins, Andrew Flemming, Mick Goodwin, Andrew Maconachie, Andy Holmes, Margaret Leyden, Mark Meadows, Mala Patel, Mike Phillips Matt Pierce, Guy Powell, Michelle Pryke, Shaun Robinson and Parag Zaveri

Money was raised for the Wibbersley & Thorne Society (www.wibbthorne.org). They buy equipment for the Patterson Institute of Manchester (R & D of Christie’s Hospital) (www.christies.org).

March 2009

Comic Relief comes around every couple of years raising funds for projects helping underprivileged children world wide.

This year the whole of Britain was encouraged, despite the recession, to " Do something funkny for money ", so at JHTS we held a Fancy Dress Darts competition, organised by Barbara (RHS top phot), and raised over £300 . So much fun was had on the day that we can't remember who actually won the darts match!!

However, the prize for the best (and most daring costume) went to Kathy (in the grass skirt), who is shown with her colleagues from our sales teams. (bottom photo)

Donations to Comic Relief are accepted at:-

In January, we entertained the owners of one of our longest-standing logistics partners, Franz de Wit, who hold stock and deliver our products, in bulk, around Europe from their base in Rotterdam Pictured here are Franz ( right), and Lars de Wit (left) , with Joanne , Logistics Manager , Sue (right) and Kathy (left) , Sales Administrators, at the Grand Staircase of the Great Hall of the Trafford Centre Manchester.

December 2008

We have completed our REACH Pre-registrations

Dealing with REACH is an ongoing project at JHTS-- and for the rest of the European Chemical Industry.
Over the past 12 months we have been working hard to ensure all of our raw-materials and products were pre-registered under the REACH regulations, either by ourselves or our suppliers.
We have no intention of withdrawing any of our products from the market or altering any formulations, and over the next 10 years we will be carrying out phased-in registrations of all necessary substances.
More information on REACH is available from the ECHA website....... http://echa.europa.eu/home_en.asp
We will be contacting our Customer and Suppliers during 2009 to begin the necessary data and information exchanges.

November 2008

In the months before Xmas, it is usual to have an event of some kind to raise funds for charity. This year John Hogg took part in a raffle organised by Barbara Massey, on behalf of Barnardo’s, a UK based Children’s Charity.  www.barnardos.org.uk.
Unfortunately events took a turn for the worse when the prize bear, Barnaby, was kidnapped (or should that be bear-napped?)  And held hostage by persons as yet unknown.
John Hogg’s office soon thereafter received a ransom note demanding a sum for the safe return of Barnaby, and the necessary “proof of life” photo, which we publish here despite its horrific and distressing nature.
Desperate pleas went out for additional donations to free the bear, enough cash was eventually collected, and   Barnaby was safely returned to the bosom of his new family, by our local community police team.
Thanks to all those involved a grand sum of £127 was raised.

August 2008

Traditionally this is one of the quieter months at JHTS , with most of  Europe on holidays , but this year  unusually for us , we have seen quite a few changes in personnel .

We have taken on  two new members to our Customer Service teams ---Pictured  are Estelle Bardeche , a multilingual logistics expert from  Paris , (far left)  and Kathy Whitbread ( 3rd from left) , an experienced sales support and import/export administrator.

Christine Bowling , Purchasing Manager, ( far right)  has left us after 12 years  to  emigrate  to Eire, while Margaret Leyden ( 2nd from  right)   has joined us , strengthening our  purchasing  team  with her  extensive experience .

Also shown is Ayo Olawale ( 2nd from left) , who is leaving our QC team to study at Manchester University this autumn.

At the back , although he is not usually so shy , is Bob Martin ( rear left) who recently passed a big birthday milestone,  (can’t say how many years but it does end in a “0”!!!),  with Rita Phillips ( centre),  and Ian Herod ( rear right) , a recent retiree.

July 2008

Nowadays we find ourselves in the midst of another oil crisis, with fuel  costs so high that  thefts of red and road diesel have multiplied over recent months.

John Hogg is currently working with  major UK  coach, bus and transport  companies to provide protection from theft and pilfering ,  for  their valuable diesel stocks,  by use of  both covert and visible marking systems , which provide both deterrence and detection.

July 2008

The end of June marked the end of an era for John Hogg when one of our longest serving members of staff retired after 32 years . Ian Herod , pictured right telling a complicated joke to Robert Webb (MD), joined  John Hogg Group  in 1976  in the midst of the 70’s energy crisis,   when the group was involved in supplying insulation for houses.  In subsequent years ,  Ian transferred to various Group  oil storage and distribution businesses , and joined Technical Solutions in Manchester  in a senior production role in  the 90’s.

All the staff wish him and his family a long ,  happy and healthy retirement.

May 2008

JHTS has always been keen to be involved in community and education projects, and we have recently been a host company for a placement under the “Europass” scheme with cooperation with the Co-operative College, based in Manchester, UK.

This scheme finds fully-funded work experience places for recent European graduates from areas of exceptionally low graduate employment within the EU, such as the Andalucia region of Spain.

Jose Garcia, (pictured right outside out UK plant), who studied chemical engineering in Seville, joined us at the beginning of May on a 3 month placement.

In conjunction with our technical and production teams, he is working on several engineering projects, with the intention of custom designing handling equipment to further reduce the exposure from low flash solvents and powder raw materials, to both our staff working with the chemicals, and the atmosphere and environment .

We hope that Jose finds the City of Manchester to be every bit as exciting as the lovely city of Seville, and we have been attempting to enlighten him in the finer points of the Mancunian dialect and other Lancashire customs, while in return he has helped us to polish up our Holiday Spanish. “Mucho gusto” enjoyed by all.!!!

April 2008

Pictured to the right are Andrew Waller (on the left) being thanked for his many years service and contribution, by Chairman Robert Webb, on the occasion of Andrew’s last board meeting at JHTS in April 2008.

Andrew intends to retire at the end of April, after being with our company for more than 20 years, the last 13 or so as Managing Director, and he certainly now deserves a bit of a rest!!.

Later this year, we hope he will mastermind our pre-registrations under REACH regulations, and in the future  he will act in a consultative role, bring his extensive experience of the fuel marking business to our R and D effort.

All the staff at JHTS wish Andrew a long and happy retirement.

March 2008

Recently staff at JHTS decided to get some exercise and have some fun with a week of events raising money for the charity Sport Relief.

Pictured (top photo) are Yun You (Sales Manager) and Mick Goodwin (Compliance Manager) with Mick’s daughter and (lower photo) Barbara Massey (Administrator) and Rita Phillips (Export Coordinator) with Grandchildren, during the Mile run around Manchester City Centre.

Other events during the fund raising week were a Sports and Entertainment Quiz, won by a team lead by Rob Martin (who perhaps  had an unfair advantage due to his long association with Soccer both as player and referee !!), a darts challenge,   a 5-a-side football match and a Nintendo Wii tennis tournament. Sponsorship and donations from family, friends and visitors raised around £1000 for the charity.

We can’t wait for Comic Relief events later in the year so we can do it all again!!.
