European legislation makes it mandatory to mark all gas oil throughout the European Union countries with the Euromarker. This enables authorities to have a harmonised system across Europe for controlling fuel fraud. When hydrochloric acid is added to fuel containing the Euromarker, it turns bright red and becomes water soluble. In this state it is readily extracted from the fuel and can be easily identified and measured regardless of the background colour of the fuel.
