Meet the Team

Lauren Evenden – Quality Control & Technical Service Support Analyst

We’re back with another Meet the Team! This week we feature a newer addition to the team, our Quality Control & Technical Service Support Analyst, Lauren Evenden! Lauren talks about her journey from Middlesbrough to Manchester through Chemistry, and everything in-between.

Tell us a bit about your Job role?

My job role varies 50/50 between quality control & tech service. In QC a large part of what I do is instrument maintenance, but I help out where I can with analysing finished product & raw material samples. On the tech service side, I do a lot of work that requires the use of our instruments, whilst also dealing with technical enquiries.

How long have you been a part of the John Hogg team?

I’ve worked at John Hogg since August 2023, so around 9 months now!

What was your first job, and did you enjoy it?

I’m from a seaside town near Middlesbrough, so my first job was at a café on the seafront working as a pot washer, and looking back it was just awful. From the staff to the customers to the pot washing itself… It was not a great job.

One thing I did like though was being able to use my maths skills when I was working at the Ice-cream window section. They used a really old till, and I was quite quick at working out the change for everyone, so that made me feel better about the job.

Did you attend University? If so, what did you study?

I did I went to MMU. When I first got to University, I thought it would be a good idea to study forensic chemistry because of the games & shows I saw when I was younger, but it turned out to be a very boring course that didn’t have many opportunities to grow in unless you knew the right people. That’s why I studied straight chemistry instead which I haven’t regretted doing.

What hobbies or activities do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I do have a few hobbies that I really like including reading, cooking & knitting, but my main hobby at the moment is paddleboarding! I’m actually going paddleboarding along part of the Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland which I’m really excited about.

I’m also a big fan of playing guitar, either electric or acoustic, which was something that I taught myself during lockdown.

Do you have a favourite sports team?

I don’t really watch football too much anymore, but my favourite team would have to be my home team of Middlesbrough! I used to actually go to a lot of games when I was younger with my dad & cousins and I even had a little ‘Boro Babe’ beanie that I used to wear…

Do you have an accomplishment that you are proud of?

For me at my stage of life, it would be getting a 1st in my University degree. Chemistry was never something that came naturally to me at school or even college. I’m really proud of how hard I worked at University to get my grade, even reaching the top 4 overall grades in my University year for Chemistry.

Tell me something about you that most people wouldn’t know

I have over 100 plants in my flat… I’m really into the different species of plants but it does feel like a bit of a jungle at times.

If you could travel to any place in the world, where would it be and why?

I think at the minute I would really love to visit Japan as I’ve always been really fascinated by the culture.

Which book or a movie has left a lasting impact on you and why?

I would say a book called “the bloody chamber” by Angela Carter. I studied it at college during my A-levels, and it made me realised that I had a love for gothic literature. Before this book I never really knew how much I loved the genre, and now all I read is gothic novels, so the book really had an impact on my reading life!

If you had to eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Specifically, Gigi Hadid’s vodka pasta sauce recipe… I make this so often that it would have to be my answer. She went viral with it a while back it’s just so simple and delicious.

What is your greatest fear?

I’d probably say heights… it’s something that I’ve never been able to get over, and even after being up the tallest building in the world…twice, I still hate the fear of heights.

Your GOAT music artist?

I’m a really big Taylor Swift fan and nobody ever expects me to say it! She has a lot of different genres and I’ve been a huge fan of her songs for so long now. I’m even going to see her twice this year which I can’t wait for.

If you could describe yourself in 3 words, what would they be?

Perfectionist, Nerdy & Spontaneous

What’s the best thing about your job?

The versatility of my job! It is not mundane at all; I get to work on so many different things each week, so it never gets boring. I also enjoy the challenging aspects of the job, like for instance if I haven’t seen a specific blend or instrument before, it’s enjoyable to be able to gather new insights about them.

What’s an important lesson you’ve learned while working at John Hogg?

I would say perseverance. There have been times where I was so frustrated that I wasn’t doing something correctly, and so close to giving up, but instead I kept going and it really paid off! People here are really grateful for your perseverance, and you end up learning more because of doing it, being able to share the knowledge with everybody else.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to new team members to succeed within our company culture?

Ask a lot of questions! Everybody has knowledge that they’re willing to share, and some employees have worked here for such a long time that it just makes sense to ask them about their experiences. It’s so beneficial to capitalise on everybody’s wealth of knowledge.

Finally; In your opinion, what sets John Hogg apart as an employer?

I feel like it’s a really nice sized company. John Hogg is small enough for your opinions & ideas to be heard, but large enough for you to individually grow within your career. You’re not just a number here, John Hogg cares a lot about employees.
